Woman At The Well

The longest interaction of the Messiah with anyone in the book of John 4:1-42.... And this interaction... is with a woman, a Samarian woman, living with a man who is not her husband - she is an outcast and socially despised by Jews. Why this woman? why at this well?

As The Chosen depicts it, deliberately, of course, Jesus goes to Samaria, and deliberately sits at this well waiting for the woman - unnamed - to have this encounter with her. Midday - as she is an outcast as a divorced woman. She not only meets Jesus - she receives Salvation. She tells everyone in the town, shares her Word with everyone and Jesus is more public than He has been. Deliberately.

She asked Jesus a series of questions when he requested a drink: How can you ask me for a drink? (v. 9) Where can you get this living water? (v. 11) Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock? (v. 12)

His responses were just as pointed — and astonishing.

In short, Jesus told her not only who He was, the Son of God, the Messiah, but that He had come to offer living water, the kind that “will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (v. 14).

FOUR KEY TAKE AWAYS for me:
1. Jesus loved the whole world, He came to save everyone, anyone. This woman's lowly status  racial, gender, marital status - shows He loves us all and meets us where we are.

2. Jesus offers Living Water and describes Salvation. Only Jesus offers Salvation - to us all. This God offers invitation. Not conversion. Not force. Our God invites us to Salvation.

3. Testimony and its importance is demonstrated as this woman ran to town to tell all to "Come and See'... this Jew who could not have know such things about me, a Samarian woman - told me everything I have every done. And it was impactful: the town became believers through this woman, whom they knew - and her testimony.

4. This scene, this story really put a highlight on how Jesus was not accepted by His own people. This was a town of so-called enemies. Nicodemus and the beautiful discussion with Jesus... trying to understand this new Kingdom Not of This Earth... and Jesus said to Nicodemus and said “You are Israel’s teacher … and do you not understand these things?” (John 3:10)

The Chosen has brought so many people to the stories within the Word. I am a fan.
